Heard ‘Round the Zone – July 2018

So … what did you do to celebrate the Porsche firms ‘Sportscar Together Day’? I celebrated with the Carolinas Region, at their annual Sommerfest, which coincided with the special day. The hosting dealership was Southpoint Porsche in Durham, NC, who threw a great party, including German brats, a Porsche cake, and much more. Great folks here!!!

Each year, Strategic Vision surveys new car buyers to find out what problems they’ve had with their cars in the first 90 days, as well as how much the owners enjoy the vehicles and what they perceive the cars’ quality to be. Strategic Vision then analyzes the results to determine which are the best. This year 42,000 people were surveyed. The new reigning champion is the Porsche Macan.

Examples of our aging PCA population are all over…and sometimes they are not pleasant. Two cases in point…the Ocmulgee Region lost a long time active member in Ken Babbitt, and the Tennessee Region lost a long time active member in Jerry Thompson. My deepest condolences go out to both families…

LeMans 2018…Even though Porsche no longer contests overall at LeMans, it showed up in force for the GTE Pro category, with no less than four new RSR’s. The #92 car, dubbed the ‘Pink Pig’, took the GTE Pro class, while the #91, in Rothmans livery, took second. In GTE Am, Patrick Dempseys’ team #77 RSR took a first. The ‘Pink Pig’ RSR was painted in the same colors that the 917-20 was painted for the 1971 running at LeMans. That ‘Pink Pig’ did not finish the race. Porsche painted its entries this year in retro schemes honoring Porsches’ 70th anniversary.

The annual Pikes Peak Hillclimb was held June 24th. Porsche did very well! In the class Time Attack 1, David Donohue driving a 2017 Porsche GT3R, took 1st, with a time of 09:37.2. In the class Porsche Clubsport, Travis Pastrana driving a 2016 Porsche Cayman, took 1st, with a time of 10:33.9. For comparison, Romain Dumas driving an all-electric VW ID R in the Unlimited Class, posted a new Hillclimb record, with a run of 07:57.1, beating the previous hill record by sixteen seconds!!!

See you at the next PCA event!
